Can you film a low budget horror film with a "1 chip" mini DV camera?

I'm confused about one chip and three chip DV cams...

Ok, I'm trying to make a low budget feature film, not a short, an actual 1 hr 30 min horror flick that takes place in a subway station with only 8-10 actors.

So what I'm trying to find out is, if I go the 1 chip mini DV route, will my movie look like a "home movie" (like Blair Witch Project -- I'm not reffering to the shakiness, but that "home movie" look) or will it look like just about any movie you go see at the theatre nowadays?

I'm not trying to find the "Star Wars" camera, but just something that will make my low budget, all done by myself, movie look like an actual movie. Doesn't have to be professional, could be little bit grainy (it IS a subway horror flick), it just needs to look like a movie. I'm trying to find a mini DV cam that's capable of this and is under $1000.

Can anyone help or provide any insight into this?

Generally, you'll do better with three. Especially in low light.

A http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro... is in your price range and will do a pretty good job {though, if you really need low-light performance you might go with 720x480 and a used {rented} GL2 or see if you can rent a high end camera}. I doubt you're going to get the same results that huge studios with experienced filmmakers and million dollar equipment get but you'll get something that's acceptable if you light it right and get creative about it.

There's all sorts of excellent lo-fi stuff being made today and that's been made in the past... Check out Mutual Appreciation, Half Nelson, Chalk, Pieces of April, Halloween, the Evil Dead stuff, even Night of the Living Dead, half the art films ever made, etc, etc...

Film quality's just one part of the equation. Sometimes lo-fi fits the story and atmosphere much more appropriately anyway... You need a strong story, good performers and a lot of creativity...

{Come to think of it... take a look at the Dogme 95 stuff:

Particularly Thomas Vinterberg's "The Celebration".}

I don't know anything about this... but I do know that Kevin Smith made clerks by scamming and maxing out credit cards to get the equipment he needed to make his film. Luckily, he has done very well, otherwise he would've been screwed lol. Take a chance! Do something crazy like he did!!!
most of the newer video cameras have decent quality. and you should be able to get a good one for under a grand. just make sure you have an adequate light source so you can get good exposure. since you're shooting in a subway station, it's important that you have enough light. mini DVs have less of that 'home movie' look than non-digital video cameras so don't worry about that all that much, but don't expect it to look like a motion picture (film-like quality). if you want that, invest in a bolex, they're old but good, and a crapload of 16 mm film.
